About this test
What is the LH & FSH Test?
The LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and FSH (Follicle‑Stimulating Hormone) test measures two key hormones produced by the pituitary gland that regulate the menstrual cycle and ovarian function.
Key Parameters
| Hormone | What it shows |
|---|---|
| LH | Timing of ovulation, ovarian reserve, and pituitary‑ovarian axis function |
| FSH | Ovarian reserve, early follicular activity, and potential for infertility |
Why is it done?
- Routine evaluation of menstrual irregularities or infertility
- Assessment of ovarian reserve before assisted reproduction
- Investigation of early menopause or delayed puberty
- Monitoring response to hormonal therapies
Early Detection
This test can help identify signs of ovarian dysfunction, premature ovarian failure, or pituitary disorders, but it does not diagnose a condition on its own. A clinician interprets results alongside symptoms, history, and other investigations.
What Abnormal Results May Indicate
- High LH: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, or pituitary adenoma
- Low LH: Hypothalamic‑pituitary suppression, menopause, or certain medications
- High FSH: Reduced ovarian reserve, early menopause, or ovarian failure
- Low FSH: Hyperthyroidism, pituitary dysfunction, or certain medications
Many factors—hydration, recent medications, stress, or menstrual cycle phase—can influence hormone levels.
Who Might Need This Test?
- Women with irregular periods or unexplained infertility
- Women planning assisted reproduction or undergoing ovarian stimulation
- Women experiencing early menopause symptoms
- Patients on hormonal therapies requiring monitoring
In short: LH & FSH testing provides insight into ovarian health and helps guide fertility and endocrine management.
Used for detecting / monitoring
Before your test
Preparation for LH & FSH Test
- Fasting: No fasting required.
- If combined with fasting tests: Follow the longest fasting period required by any test in the panel.
- Sample collection: A small vein (usually in the arm) is cleaned, a needle inserted, and about 5 mL of blood drawn. The process takes 5–10 minutes.
- What to expect: A brief pinch and a short needle insertion; mild discomfort is normal.
- Precautions: Avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise 24 hours before the test. Inform the lab if you are on hormonal medications (e.g., birth control, hormone replacement) as they may affect results.
- Aftercare: Apply gentle pressure to the puncture site; you can resume normal activities immediately.
- Note: Confirm any specific preparation with your doctor or the lab. This information is educational and not a substitute for professional medical advice.
Sample type: Blood
Report parameter guide
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
A hormone produced by the pituitary gland that triggers ovulation and stimulates the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone.
Low: Low LH levels can indicate pituitary dysfunction, hypothalamic disorders, or premature ovarian failure.
High: High LH levels may suggest menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or pituitary adenoma.
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
A hormone released by the pituitary gland that stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles and regulates estrogen production.
Low: Low FSH levels can point to pituitary or hypothalamic disorders, or certain genetic conditions affecting hormone production.
High: High FSH levels may indicate menopause, ovarian failure, or diminished ovarian reserve.
