About this test
What is an Abdomen + Internal Pelvic Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a non‑invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the organs in the abdomen and pelvis. It helps doctors see the size, shape, and position of organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, uterus, ovaries, bladder, and any fluid collections.
Key Parameters Reported
| Parameter | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Organ size and contour | Detects enlargement, shrinkage, or structural changes |
| Presence of cysts, masses or stones | Identifies benign or malignant growths and gallstones |
| Blood flow (color Doppler) | Assesses circulation in vessels and organs |
| Fluid collections | Detects ascites, pelvic fluid, or abscesses |
| Organ position | Reveals organ displacement or organ‑on‑organ relationships |
Why is this test done?
- Routine check‑up for abdominal pain or pelvic discomfort
- Evaluation of symptoms such as jaundice, abdominal swelling, or urinary problems
- Monitoring known conditions like kidney stones, liver disease, ovarian cysts, or uterine fibroids
- Pre‑operative assessment before abdominal or pelvic surgery
Early Detection
This test can help identify signs of conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, liver disease, ovarian cysts, or uterine fibroids, but it does not diagnose them on its own. A doctor interprets the images together with symptoms, history, and other investigations.
What does an abnormal result mean?
An abnormal finding may indicate a cyst, mass, stone, fluid collection, or organ enlargement. Many factors—hydration status, recent meals, medications, or body position—can influence the appearance of organs. Therefore, results are always considered in the clinical context.
Who might be advised to get this test?
- Adults with unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain
- Women with irregular periods or pelvic pressure
- Patients with jaundice or unexplained weight loss
- Individuals with a history of kidney stones or gallstones
- People scheduled for abdominal or pelvic surgery
Quick Summary
An abdominal and pelvic ultrasound is a safe, painless imaging test that visualises organs and helps detect structural abnormalities. It is often used to investigate pain, monitor known conditions, and guide treatment decisions.

Before your test
Preparation for an Abdomen + Internal Pelvic Ultrasound
- Fasting: No fasting is required for this test. If you are having a combined test that requires fasting (e.g., blood glucose), follow the fasting instructions for that test.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before the scan to keep the bladder comfortably full, which helps the sonographer visualise pelvic organs.
- Medication: Take your regular medications as prescribed unless your doctor advises otherwise. Do not stop any medication without consulting your physician.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown for the procedure.
- Procedure: A gel is applied to your abdomen and pelvis, and a handheld transducer (probe) is moved over the area. The scan takes about 15–30 minutes and is painless. No needles or injections are involved.
- After the scan: You can resume normal activities immediately. No special precautions are needed.
- Confirm details: Check with your doctor or the lab for any specific instructions tailored to your health condition.
