About this test
What is HbA1c?
HbA1c (Hemoglobin A1c) is a blood test that measures the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the past 2–3 months. It reflects how much glucose has attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
Key Parameter
| Parameter | What it shows |
|---|---|
| HbA1c (%) | Average blood glucose over 2–3 months |
Why it is done
- Routine check‑up for people with diabetes.
- To diagnose diabetes or pre‑diabetes.
- To monitor how well blood sugar is controlled in people already diagnosed.
- In pregnancy to screen for gestational diabetes.
Early detection
HbA1c can help identify signs of Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes, but it does not diagnose on its own. A doctor interprets the result together with symptoms, history, and other tests.
What abnormal results mean
- High HbA1c suggests that blood sugar has been consistently high. It may indicate uncontrolled diabetes or risk of complications.
- Low HbA1c is uncommon but can occur with very low blood sugar, certain hemoglobin variants, or recent blood loss.
Many factors—diet, medications, hydration, anemia—can influence the result.
Who should get it
- Anyone with a family history of diabetes.
- People with risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, or a sedentary lifestyle.
- Pregnant women, especially after 24 weeks.
- Patients already diagnosed with diabetes to check control.
Quick summary
HbA1c is a simple blood test that gives a long‑term picture of blood sugar control, helping doctors manage and prevent complications of diabetes.
Used for detecting / monitoring
Before your test
Preparation
- Fasting: No fasting required. You can eat and drink normally.
- If combined with fasting tests: Follow the strictest fasting rule (usually 8–12 hours).

- Discomfort: Mild pinch or sting from the needle; no pain after the sample is taken.
- Precautions: No special precautions needed. If you are on medications that affect blood sugar, inform the lab; they may note it.
- After the test: You can resume normal activities.
- Note: Confirm any specific instructions with your doctor or the lab. This information is educational and not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months
Low: May indicate very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or inadequate test performance
High: May indicate poor long‑term blood sugar control, risk of diabetes complications
